Someone once asked Damarcus, “Why do hairdressers like to cut so much?” Then he was asked, “Why can’t I ever get a quality cut?” Damarcus's favorite statement is: “Women never cut my hair right!” All these statements and questions tend to be the running consensus to those who have been victimized by the dreaded scissor happy cosmetologist but there is a solution!

Let’s start first by saying that the rule of thumb for stylists is: the foundation of any great hairstyle or color starts with a great haircut. This means, ladies and gentlemen, that the foundation is very, very, important. So in your pursuit of the “perfect” look finding a great haircutter should be at the top of your list.

When you shop around for that special someone to loosen up your locks asking plenty of questions is the key. Find out if they have had advanced training or attend classes. These are sure fire indicators that you may have a good cutter/stylist in your midst, and if that doesn’t work; watch, wait, and listen. Observe someone else being cut by your potential cutter/stylist. Before you receive services listen and observe. You may be able to determine how happy you will be as a client by seeing how someone else fares first.

Listen to the words your cutter/stylists uses. Words such as face shape, structure, texturizing, and balance. Usually stylists who have studied cutting a great deal use terminology that relays a comprehension about what they are doing.

Watch how your stylist holds their scissors. Do they maintain control of the hair? Is there an ease to the service they provide for clients? Do they look, behave, and talk like a professional? If so, they probably are. Now with these pointers, your search can begin.

Now let’s “cut” to the chase: curly hair isn’t straight hair. Straight hair isn’t necessarily thick hair. We should treat each hair type differently. There are different cutting techniques for different hair types. In order to get the finished looked that compliments you, you need a cutter/stylist that will examine your hair and let you know what is needed in order for you to have the style and look that you want which also works with your hair type.

A good cutter/stylist knows that hair can be cut dry or wet with razors or shears and texturizing is a GOD send when done correctly! A good cutter/stylist should also remember that tools can be dulled by cutting dry and using various techniques. A good rule of thumb for any cutter or stylist is to keep it sharp!
